Sunbirds
The Sunbird was born in the industrial North East of England a craft which is eminently suitable for use by the novice but with exciting racing performance ideal for competition. Conceived originally by industrialist Peter Heron, the design was taken on by Peter Atkinson and George Mitchell at the Newcastle upon Tyne’s Department of Naval Architecture. Fitted originally with foot pedal steering, it was easy to convert to hand control by routing control cables through turning blocks to a tiller mounted on the aft end of the keel box. If foot pedals are fitted, the boat is ideal for use by upper limb amputees or sailors with limited arm movement.. |

International
2.4mR
A single seat high performance craft being a one fifth scale
12 metre boat. There is a strong 2.4mR Association with a
number of fleets around the UK but mostly in the south of
England. This boat is very popular all over the world and
is sailed by both able bodied and disabled sailors. It is
currently a Paralympic class boat. |

Squib
Keelboat
This is a 2/3/4 man keel boat measuring 19’6”
and is a superb training platform. Fitting transverse thwarts
and a lifting tiller allows people with quite severe disabilities
to slide up to windward. Fitted with automatic or ‘Spiro’
pole systems it is possible to use a spinnaker. |

 |
Drascombe
Lugger
We use both a Lugger (18’9”) and a Longboat Cruiser
(21’9”) to take out parties with learning difficulties
or as an alternative to gain boat handling skills of larger
craft with differing sail configurations. Drascombes range
from the 16’ Dabber to the 25’ Gig. |

Sailfish
565
This particular boat (although built to EU standards to an
old design known as the ‘Sailfish 18’) was the
prototype ‘Sailfish 565’. It has been modified
for mixed ability use by all controls being lead back to the
top of the coachroof. A roller reefing jib and single line
reefing on the mainsail are also fitted for ease of handling.
This boat is used to give ‘big boat experience’
and also the chance for offshore sailing. There is a strong
Sailfish Association. |
 |
|
Pioner-Multi
Powerboat
This powerboat is fitted with a 50hp four stroke engine and
drop down bow door, allowing mixed ability crews to manage
race and rescue duties. Supplied by Caley Marina. |
