Below is a list of the activities we are currently organising at Derbyshire Sailing Endeavour. Please visit us or contact us
(see our contact details page) for information on how you can get involved, either as a volunteer to lend much valued support, or to take part in the great activities yourself.
sailing activity Casual Sailing
This perhaps the most popular way that most of our members spend is casual sailing or to paraphrase what Ratty said in Wind in the Willows. “There is nothing better than just messing about in boats”.
group sailing activity Group Sailing
This is something we arrange from time to time to introduce people with disabilities to sailing and perhaps through this rehabilitation after injury or a stroke. Two examples of this type of organisation are Sportability and the MS Society.
boat maintenance activity

Boat Maintenance
This is a fundamental part of any sailing project. Equipment failures are not only inconvenient they can be downright dangerous. It is also essential that all running rigging and controls have been modified to be to hand and easy to use. Sometimes quite simple modifications can make all the difference.

For instance our Squibs can be sailed by paraplegics just by adding transverse thwarts for helm and crew to get up to weather. A lifting tiller also aids the helm to do this. Another very important element of boat maintenance is working together as a team during the winter months when sailing may not be possible or desirable.

race training activity

powerboat certification activity

For Serious Sailors
For the serious sailor a wide range of courses is available through our host club Carsington Sailing Club. Being a Recognised Training Centre by the Royal Yachting Association, means that courses for all kinds of sailing can be obtained from Dinghy Sailing to RYA Powerboat II certification. Winter theory courses cover Day Skipper to Yachtmaster Offshore. First Aid and VHF courses are run throughout the year.

Please bear in mind that although you can take people out in boats and demonstrate sailing without any qualifications you cannot issue certificates or purport to be a qualified sailing instructor without complying with the rules and guidelines set out by the RYA. In effect you must become a Recognised Training Establishment to do so. Another very important aspect of this activity is that you must ensure that you are covered by insurance. Talk to your insurance provider for this kind of information. See information about Insurance
